87/ 4kq new problems

Jonathan,

I could almost bet the clear looking rubber bushing on
the shift rod on the tranny is on is way out. It's
about a $7 item.

It happened on my both of my VW QSWs (essentially an
Audi 4KQ) and my 5KTQ.

Get under the car, provided is safely secured for you
to go under of course, and get a hold of the shift
linkage that runs between tranny and chassis and if it
wobbles or feels loose, then your car has a bad
bushing.

Alternatively, you can check to see if the shift
linkage is loose (again a sign of bad bushing) if
you're able to reach over the driver's side of the
engine over to the top of bell housing where the shift
linkage connects.

To remove and replace (R&R) the bushing, the whole
shift linkage needs to come out.
