Hmmm... I've always wondered about progressive rate springs. From the 
pic, it looks like these are designed with the soft part (for small 
bumps etc) at the top, and for larger bumps, these are supposed to bind 
(making them essentially solid) and in doing so, activate the stiffer 
(lower) portion of the spring.

Seems odd that they are bound with no load on though. Would effectively 
make the springs constant rate.

Lower part seems to have decent spacing here, but constant rate springs 
without the bound part would allow for more travel before binding.

I'm just analysing what I can see here, and am not an expert, maybe 
someone with more knowledge will chime in ...
