Huw-
With coilovers that have separate spring preload and ride height adjustment,
what you describe is correct. Cheaper coilovers combine ride height
adjustment
with the preload, kind of like how Jim describes his Bilstein setup.

Jim-
If the car is bouncing, your shocks are not controlling the springs
properly-
that's not good. I would set the ride height according to the best
combination of
shock damping and spring rate- try the middle setting if the low setting is
too
bouncy. If you're still getting a bouncy ride, I'd consider revalving the
shocks
(since it is quite easy w/ Bilstein's service dept.).
