Chris: I would peel off what I could as far as the fabric part of
the duct tape and then go to your local auto body supply house and
buy a 3M Roloc for your drill chuck and also buy an item called the
3M pinstripe and decal remover. Cost for both is under $15 and worth
every nickel. It comes in 4" diameter and 6" diameter. It's pretty
much a series of thin floppy plastic discs that get stiff when you
fire up the drill. I've just in the last week "buffed"
off substantial old duct tape off a kevlar kayak I'm working on with
no damage to the finish. Keep the drill moving and the area won't
get too hot. The tool is great for getting old contact cement off surfaces too.
Of course softening it up with methyl ethyl ketone or toluene might
work too, but I wouldn't use the Roloc after doing that.
