Jim-
You're right on track. I wouldn't necessarily call it ghetto, but it's not
the ideal
way of doing things. However, the added adjustability comes at a price.
Also, adding adjustability isn't always a good thing- how many people can
setup
a multi-adjustable coilover setup properly? It's a major PITA to adjust
these things.
Take for example, an Ohlins Flag series coilover:
ride height
spring preload
camber (via the camber plates)
caster (also via the camber plates)
compression damping
rebound damping
All of these things are adjustable- now to get things right, you need to
adjust 6 different
things. With something as simple as lowering springs and shortened shocks,
there are far
less things to screw up and if it is valved properly for the spring, you get
the same benefits,
although you could really tweak things to perfection with the aforementioned
coilovers. You
could also screw things up so badly that you'll have a very hard time fixing
it once you're screwed
the settings up royally.
With super-trick coilovers, the setup is by far the most important thing.
