David, I have to agree with the sentiments here, but I would probably
put more emphasis on professional training. Friends and family, unless
versed in motorcycle rider training, are generally not a good source
to turn to for your first street bike. The MSF beginner's course will
really help to show you the proper methods of turning, stopping,
accelerating, and street survival tactics.
What it really comes down to is this; it's not a game out there. The
excitement is real, the feeling of power is real, but hard stops are
real, too. Things like trees, curbs, dogs, driveways, sand, decreasing
radius turns, blind corners, etc... they all can hurt you and hurt you
bad.
It's good to read that you've purchased some gear. I personally NEVER
get on my motorcycle without full Vanson leathers, helmet, gloves, and
boots. The one time that I REALLY went down hard I was covered in gear
but still broke up a considerable portion of my right side.
It's very important that you go into this thing with the right
mentality because it leads to a long riding career filled with trips,
friends, corners, and close calls unfortunately.
