My 2 cents - first take the safety course - you know that...
For a beater bike - get an enduro! This way you can ride off road a bit
to get used to the bike a bit. Granted off-road riding is different but
at least you can get used to the clutch and stopping without the danger
of other cars.
Enduro's are generally lighter than cruisers and easier to handle. They
can be had cheap too.
