I left work a little early to start some diagnostic work. I took all of the
intake hoses out to inspect, along with the (euro) headlight so I could get
the air filter out ( i did not pull the codes on Saturday when I got up -
stupid, but I will take it around the block with the head light removed soon
enough).
And then quite unexpectedly found the source of the bad burning smell.
There, wedged between the exhaust manifold and the turbo exhaust outlet was
a cold start injector. Or at least what was left of it. The plastic housing
was a sorry lump of charred plastic. I do not know what it was doing there,
but they evidently dropped mine, ore one they were using for diagnostic
purposes. Its is somewhat comforting, because at least I now know that the
bad burning smell is not related to the other problems.
Next I will will check all the hoses for leaks (unlikely), double check
that the waffle is seated and then see if I can get it started and then pull
the codes. I suspect the mixture is not set correctly at all, but I need to
get it started to check that.
Thanks for all your suggestions!
Sheesh.
Dave
