83 CGT Cruise control issue

My son wants to know if his cruise coontrol will work if his 
speedometer cable is disconnected and if it won't, is there a magic 
bypass in order to get it working.  $91 for the replacement 
cable  from the dealer is beyond his budget for now.  Any chance a 
Quantum or other cable would work?  His screws on to the speedo and 
goes to the tranny unlike the bayonet style mount on my 87 4kq.  Are 
there common failures for the cruise control that are easy to trace down?
