I agree about the uses for Cosmoline, used to play with it in my work.
Cosmoline comes in a number of grades, ranging from light tan/almost clear,
to nearly black.  The light stuff is removable using shop towels and perhaps
a bit of light oil, while the really heavy stuff needs putty knives and lots
of mineral spirits and elbow grease.  I would tend to agree that it really
isn't the right stuff for the underside of our cars, not having really been
formulated at either end of the spectrum for that duty.  I would use the
stuff that was intended to be used under cars and you should be good to go.
