Any BTDT on removing exhausts on an A2 Golf/Jetta/GTi/GLi 8V?

Hello fellow VAG fans!

Trying to remove the exhaust mid pipe from the exhaust manifold on an
HT motor (KE Jetronic, 1.8 liter, 8V) VW and have found that the
fasteners ("C" shaped "hooks") just don't want to seem to come off.
Any BTDT on this? I am assuming that this is part of the "flex" that
was built into the OEM exhaust.

If no ideas, any ideas on where to ask?
