Sometimes all they need is fresh oil of a decent grade and weight.

Not too thin, not too thick.  Mobil1 15w50 if it's still available.

I've been using Rotella 15W40 for summer lately and have no complaints.

If you think they're gummy or dirty, then Marvel Mystery Oil as others
have suggested.

Using a proper filter with an anti-drainback valve helps a lot to
eliminate noise at startup.
