As usual, Huw is correct. With pix from auditony (thanx again), even if I could reach the lock with some fabbed tool, looks like I couldn't really do anything to it.
Car is currently on vacation at the beach (shore for you NJ'ers) for 10 days (mostly parked) with my son (apparently just some beach towels are locked in - not to mention the spare tire and jack! - note to self, bring spare and extra jack/tools this weekend!). Audi projects around here take forever.
Looks like I'll have to decide to drill into sheet metal or destroy the taillight. Mine's got the typical cracks around the lock and used ones do pop up on eBay fairly regularly...maybe I'll follow Huw's advice.

I looked at my 89 90Q to confirm the bad news. The latch pin, which is
held on by two bolts, isn't accessible from "inside the trunk". The
rest of the gizmos are covered by the trunk lid liner, making access
virtually impossible.
The pump may be in the trunk, but the lines are all over the car.
Pressurizing the system anywhere should "try" to unlock all the doors
and trunk. Of course, if the mechanism in the trunk is knackered, that
won't help.
If you have to get destructive, I'd suggest destroying the right side
tailight assembly, not the sheet metal.
I just checked the attic to see if I had a spare trunk lid to give you
guidance from, but no dice there.
Best of luck!
