I will be doing some maintenance on a '96 A4 - non-quattro, automatic trans.
With 2.8l V6.
Mileage is approaching 60K, so I assume the timing belt is near due and would
like to know if there are any difficulties or caveats with the job. I have no
Bentley for this car, so appreciate any tips or procedure regarding this,
especially if it is not straightforward. Also, what is the book rate on this
job?
I plan to do the serpentine belt - definitely needs replacement. I hope this
is fairly easy.

Friend and I did one on his 96 non-q, auto A4 about 4-5 months ago. We also changed a couple of the pullies (I think ac and one other I can't recall). Did the plugs and wires as well. The only issue we came across was attaching the transmission cooler lines back into the rad. We finally did but what we found out was that it would have been easier to leave them in and disconnect them from the two large hoses that are next to the oil pan. You loose a bunch of transmission fluid but our plan was to service the transimission as well. We also used zip ties on the cams so that they wouldn't move when replacing the belt. Seemed to work.
But overall, it was similar to my 18tqa.
