Interesting Thread on Claimed 'Unintended Acceleration' Incident

... perhaps "losing steering" means the steering column locking up and
preventing any steering input ... assist or no ... I remember a poll here
some time ago ... some Audis do not lock the column until the key is
physically removed, others lock the column as soon as the key is switched to
the off position. After that poll I made a point to verify that on my cars
the column does not lock until the key is removed (WHEW!).

I had a situation on one of my cars which could be categorized as UI ... I
was merging from one freeway onto another and when I let up on the throttle
I found the car was still accelerating. In my case there was little other
traffic so I could take a couple seconds to figure out what was going on.
In my case it was clearly the cruise control ... I switched the CC off and
the throttle returned to my control. I used to drive around with the CC
switched on, even when I wasn't using it. Could I have somehow hit one of
the CC controls as I was operating the turn signals? Could be, but I don't
know how that would have gotten to a situation where the car was continuing
to accelerate ... I was going over 80MPH when I switched the CC off. I have
learned my lesson, now I only turn the CC on when I am planning to use it.

This is a 1992 model, so we're not talking about a car with computer
controlled throttle, right? The V8Q was recalled for a plastic piece on the
cruise control linkage breaking apart and creating an uncontrollable WOT
situation ... perhaps this is a similar situation.
