Steering lock/ignition interface. Was Interesting Thread on Claimed 'Unintended Acceleration' Incident

If you insert the key in the ignition or even turn it "on" and then back off, the steering lock will activate if you turn the wheel slightly.  However, if you have the key turned to "on" and turn the wheel like you would while driving,  and subsequently turn the key to "off" without removing it, the steering lock does not activate.
