VAG-COM coolent temp

You may recall that I asked about temp readings earlier.

Its now clear that the coolant gauge is telling me the car is in danger 
of overheating. No imagination needed.

But a quick hit to the upper and lower hoses with an infra-red gun 
(aren;t they great?) says its running at 180 (top) and <120 (bottom, if 
I got the right hose). Something's odd.  Maybe a sender, maybe a gauge.

how do I read through vag-com?  I went through he various menus and 
failed, so far.
