S4 (m.y. 2001) transmission Q:

First, what's Scott doing with an S4? =)
Second, the shifter on the S4 is cable operated (2 cables) and is fairly
complex in it's movement. The transmission end has brackets with ball
ends. If one of the plastic bushings is cracked, worn, or the bracket is
bent, it won't be possible to adjust the shifter (which is done at the cabin
end with 2 (5mm allen socket head) bolts.
The steering rack can be removed without transmission removal, so there's no
reason the tech would've damaged it.
There's no inner tie rod, (that's the rack), so the outer tie rod (a fairly
easy repair) and boot was just replaced, I'm sure.
If there's air in the clutch slave/master hydraulic system, it's possible
for a "slightly sticky" gear to not work if the clutch is still
dragging..... but it's unlikely. Might be worth bleeding though to rule it
out.
Let me know if you need repair diagrams for the steering. I can e-mail them
to you.
Hope I've helped,
Mark Rosenkrantz
