Okay, then I've got another question.

 

If both bulbs are out, and the autocheck system doesn't detect a difference,
would it signal a failure?

You're correct.  Sometimes even old versus new bulbs (resistance variance)
from various manufacturers can trip it.  The brake switch has no impact on
the autocheck.
