Sick Feeling - Engine not engaging trans.

Is there any chance that the clutch slave cylinder is somehow stuck, or 
jammed?  (or the master, I guess, or the fluid line clogged, something 
preventing the slave from releasing)

I'm assuming that you have done this sort of thing far too many times to 
have assembled it wrong.

I know it's a pain, but it is easier than taking the transmission off, 
but you could try removing the slave to see what happens.  Or, perhaps, 
just opening its bleed screw.
