Earlier models didn¹t have the speed sensor on the locking differential and
I believe there was some trouble as you described ­ cockpit error, with ugly
results. 

Rather than bypass, consider just accepting the wisdom Audi presents. If
you¹re stuck enough that you have to lock the differential you¹ll never get
out spinning the tires. Walk it out slowly. Spinning heats the tires,
creating ice and making the situation worse. It takes patience, but
³walking² out (gentle application of power and a little rocking) often will
free the vehicle. Shovel a little snow out of the way and spread a little
sand or cat litter. I¹ve driven out of seemingly impossible situations with
the TQ. Stomping the gas to power out will not work, no matter how fast you
spin, IMHO.
