[urq] Engine-Trans install saga

Thanks Mike, Steve,
I don't need to update the suspension - that's the way I want it! Koni
w/Eibach and G60s.
I'm just looking to see if I can/should modify the front crossmember and core
support using later B3/B4 parts. It appears that at least the core support
may bolt on, but I can't tell for sure. I have the front cross-member from a
B4 90, but that would definitely need to be lengthened, and no provision to
mount the spoiler.
Just seeing if there is an appropriate mod. To allow for larger intercooler
placement and/or easier service access. At this point, it is looking like a
waste of time.
Ben

I did some investigation into the B3/B4 suspension.
I liked the 82 mm wheel bearing in the CQ struts.
I also was assuming that the 2 piece struts from the CQ where lighter than the
urq boat anchors.
It gets a little involved with this swap. You want to keep the track the same
as the urq so that the wheels don't rub on anything. You also have to find
axles that are the correct length, have the right inner and outer joints.
You have to get some 5-lug hubs. Those also figure into the track, since all
hubs don't have the same offset.
You also have to deal with the brakes. Since the hub offset will be different
than the urq, the brake rotor will need a different hat offset. All this is
tough to measure when the struts are out of the car.
After I did some weighing on a shipping scale and realized that the CQ struts
are actually heavier than the urq struts I abandoned the project.
I am using the cast A-arms from the later type 89. Actually I have cast
A-arms from the Euro RR 20v urq, but they are the same as the type 89 except
the sway bar bushing is installed from the factory. The type 89 with the cast
arms have the sway bar that attaches to the upright not the A-arm.
I would like to find some '85 urq front struts that use the 82 mm bearing.

... sorry to hear that you're going to have to pull it all apart again Ben.
:-(
I was talking to Daryn Baker yesterday and he was telling me that he had the
sub-frame off his car and was going to an updated front suspension ... sounded
similar to what you're considering. Is there a write up somewhere about
updating the suspension to a newer style? Since I'm going to need to drop my
engine and tranny for a clutch problem too (we should get together ... my
clutch won't disengage!) I really should give a suspension update some
thought.
