steering wheel question...5000 vs 4000

i thought the type44 5000 and the type 85 4000 used the same steering 
wheels..because they look the same..  but i guess theyre not.

the '85-'87 4000 uses a brass trim ring on the back of the steering wheel, 
like mid 80's vw's. 

and the 5000 uses a brass spring loaded plunger ...

im assuming they cannot be interchanged?

also what was the first year for airbags in a type44?   i pulled a steering 
wheel from a '89 100 and it had no airbag..
