Audi 200 Heater Control Valve

Hi - so the 200 overheated today...

I was able to get it home and found the "in" side of the heater control
valve had broken - clearly coolant went everywhere...

There seemed to be plenty of coolant still in the reservoir the first
time I stopped the car to let it cool down. Less so when I got it home
(no worries it was a short trip).

What I can't figure out is why it would overheat if there was still
coolant in the system. By looking at the valve, it being broken would
simulate it being wide open. There would be no (or very little) fluid
returning through the system - but then again - in the summer when the
heat is off - this would be the case as well.

Perhaps one of you could enlighten me - perhaps there is a secondary
problem?

Fan was working properly - no other leaks were evident.

TIA !

Vittorio -
