Hi Tony,
Okay tonight I consulted the Bentley at my buddy's shop, and I
understand the terminology. What I was calling the tumbler is
officially part of the "lock cylinder". I ordered a new one and so I
will be ready to either take the steering wheel off and drill the hole
to get the old one out, or take it to the local 5-cylinder guy at the
German car shop in my neighborhood.

FWIW it appears that the "tumbler" came out of the lock cylinder
assembly, but a semicircular part that it fits into is still inside.
Looks like something wore out, like I said before maybe a pin or cotter
key.
