Cat-back mufflers

I replaced the center muffler with a pair of smaller straight-through several years ago. Midwinter, those mufflers started to rust out and I had the guy who did the first change replace the straight-throughs with a couple pieces of pipe. Still have the rear muffler in place. Like others report, the straight-pipe fix for the center muffler rotting out is a bit louder. It is slightly noticeable inside, more so outside. At highway speeds, there is a slight drone, but it didn't really bother me. I spent maybe fifty days driving 120 miles roundtrip after the change and just got used to tuning the radio slightly louder.

Looking to minimize the hit to the wallet, I have a few questions:
* Can I replace just the rear (or center) muffler, and put a pipe in place
of the center (rear) muffler? Will it reduce noise enough to be "normal"?
