1995 A6 windshield antenna

According to my Bentley, my 1995 A6q has an FM antenna
embedded in the front windshield.  I can see no trace of one in
the windshield, and I pulled the passenger A-pillar trim and don't
see the antenna amplifier that's supposed to be there, or any sign
of an electrical connector.  My FM reception is neither especially
good or bad.
Anybody know the story here?  Am I supposed to have a front
windshield antenna?  Would my reception be acceptable without it?
FWIW, it's a Bose Gamma radio, and it definitely has two antenna
wires heading into the back.  There's no evidence the windshield
was ever replaced, but if it was, it was done very early in its life.
