I'm not sure a deal that falls through (or item that gets sold before 
you turn up) counts as "stiffed".

But I don't know *exactly* what was said, by whom and to who.  According 
to Dave above, no "hold" was agreed upon, although there may very well 
have been a misunderstanding.

When someone says they "want to buy" something I have for sale, I tell 
them that until they pay for it, it's still for sale.  Although I would 
probably do a short hold if they call and say they are turning up with 
cash in an hour or two, telling any other interested parties what's 
going on if they call during the "hold" period.
