Diagnostic code monitor

The trouble with a Benz is that they've got a ton of control modules that
are not part of the standardized OBD system. Even the main engine computer
will store codes and information that can not be read without a Benz
specific scanner such as the DAS/STAR system. A '95 car is legally not
obligated to be OBD-II compatible, and the switchover was a running thing...
some '95 Mercedes' are not OBD-II compatible at all, and others are only
partially, while still others are fully OBD-II legal. 1996 was the model
year OBD-II because required and codes were standardized. Where I'm working
now I've got access to the specific systems for VAG (VAG-COM), Benz (DAS,
STAR, and WIS), BMW (AutoDiagnose and another), Rover (AutoDiagnose), Jag
(Autodiagnose), Volvo (VADIS), and Porsche (Bosch handheld). You'd be amazed
at what the specific tools will do that generics won't.
I'd say just get a VAG-COM and use the 'generic OBD-II' function on the
Benz, and you'll have it to use on your VAG car(s). Tricky issues will have
you finding somebody near you with STAR diag system to dive into the better,
more detailed, propriatary codes.
Autozone, by the way, can only do OBD-II codes. They will not have the
proper equipment for the car.
