Rich running? A6 2.8 30v

My mom drives an A6 2.8 30v, ACK engine. I think it's running a bit rich, as
the exhaust smells like that, it sometimes feels like it's missing on low
rpms and gas mileage is rather poor.
I want to check the ECU temperature sensor, but does anyone here know where
it's located and what values it should have? Or any other things that could
cause rich running. In addition, it needs 2 seconds cranking when cold, it
"feels" just a bit too long.. Any good tips and what to check out?
