5 seconds of cranking to start

No, it means you have a lack of fuel pressure when starting. Likely causes
are as listed before... fuel pump check valve, fuel pressure accumulator,
o-ring on the fuel pressure relief valve in the distributor, warm-up
regulator, and leaky injectors (I feel like I'm leaving something out...).
All of the above tend to be close to equally probable, but I'd start with
the check valve on the fuel pump. Really without a gauge it's like going
deer hunting with a big rock... you may eventually get lucky, but you won't
be anywhere near accurate. Of course in this case eventually after you've
replaced enough stuff you will fix it, but I'd bet you'd be clear of what
you paid for the car at that point, not to mention waaaaay over what a fuel
pressure tester would cost.
