Too much Crankcase ventalation?

A place for oil to deposit after leaving the crankcase to keep it out of 
the air, I would imagine.  Done right it might even get drawn back into 
the intake and burned at various engine conditions (hence the PCV valve).

Yes, that's what it's for - but isn't it fed by the fuel tank vent line? 
  Which needs to go somewhere "safe"?

I think you need a place for crankcase pressure (from heated air, if 
nothing else, and of course blow-by) to go.
