rear shocks

Wise ones: is there an easy way to replace the shocks on the rear of an '86
4kq? Or is major surgery required to get them out? If there is a way to
avoid another large auto repair bill, I'm all ears. I don't have a Bentley
available so can't even read how it's supposed to be done..
