Not necessarily true.  Truck and bus fleets have increased their bulb
life by leaving them on all the time, most replacements are because the
reflector or glass has darkened.  Motorcycle head lamps also last a lot
longer than similar auto lamps...because they're on all the time.  The
filament is less susceptible to failure from road induced shock because
the filament is much more forgiving and flexible when it's on.  A friend
has a Honda Gold Wing that still sports the original head lamp, 30+ years
and still going, albeit a little anemic by todays standards.
An old trick used to illuminate remote tunnels is to use 220volt bulbs on
a 115volt circuit, the light is a bit yellow, but the bulb will last just
about forever.  Don't know if the same would hold for DC bulbs though.
