high overview of the [potential] problem area.

  Note that generic OBD readers do not provide any VW/Audi-specific
  diagnostic codes and descriptions -- which is to say most of them!
  
  If you don't want to buy VAG-COM (which, IMHO is just as necessary
  for 96+ VWs and Audis as the Bentley manuals is to all of them),
  borrow one from somebody.
