They may be talking about the aluminum plug that sits on top of the
adjustment screw in the airflow meter housing. They need to drill a tiny
pilot hole and get a metal screw threaded into the plug. Once threaded with
enough bite, the plug can pulled out with pliers. Kind of tricky to do, just
avoid getting metal shavings into the intake. You can always take the filter
out and wipe out the air cleaner box just in case it happens.

The problem could be electrical just because the shift was so dramatic and
also you mentioned replacing a sensor. Having even touched the wires might
have made some wire open or close a circuit. You may want to do some
diagnostics and do some resistance checks on the various engine harness
plugs to the ECU while jiggling things a little. In the meantime, it's
important to set the mixture right for whatever the ECU is reading for now,
and then just keep an eye on it.
