Max.
I have an old Cadillac that does this because the antenna lead doesn't make good contact in the back of the radio.
It works okay near the radio transmitter because the 50,000 watts is strong enough to recieve without an antenna.....but farther away.....
Check for continuity in the antenna coax run to the antenna (base of the mast and the back where it slides (plugs) in the radio.
If your mast is an amplified unit, ( similar to the newer front and rear systems in the 200, Ur S4, A series )
you signal amp may be bad.? Some windshields / screens have an antenna lead in them and an aftermarket replacement without the wire (or it connected) can mean poor radio reception.
Later on near year 2000 ? they also changed the wire lead thickness.? So older radio leads are now much thicker than the newer thinner leads.
Hope this covers the bases for you.

Hi all,
Patient 1986 Type 44, Turbo Quattro, original radio.
When travelling about 100 km or more from Toronto, no FM stations are
received, when in Toronto only a few FM stations are received, and not very
well. Few AM stations are received far from Toronto, more AM stations
received when in Toronto. Power antenna rises automatically when radio
turned on. Any suggestions?
Max
