As I recall, this car sat for a long time unused.

I would recommend (and meant to days ago) that you try to disconnect, 
clean, and reconnect as many electricals as you can, especially under 
the hood.  Light corrosion can wreak havoc on the low current fittings, 
and on the '84 most of them are not very well sealed.

It's also a lot cheaper than replacing the sender, when all it might 
actually take to fix a problem is taking the connector apart and putting 
it back together (that alone will often clean them enough to work again).

If you can get some, use silicon dielectric grease on each connector's 
contacts before plugging them back in.
