Yes, you are most likely correct about the cause of your instrument
problems. It can be a royal PITA to find the exact cause but it
likely lies in a poor solder joint inside the instrument cluster (IC).

Create as much space for yourself in behind the steering wheel and
the IC. Does your car have a tlit/slide steering wheel? If so make use of
it.

Pull the IC - 3 or 4 screws accessed from low down at foot level and
then looking upward at the under side of the trim strip at the lower
edge of the IC. Remove the screw and then pull the trim strip
out. This exposes 3/4 screws at bottom edge of IC. Remove
them. Now slide the IC out of the dash far enough to allow you to
tilt the IC toward you at the top so you can access the several
wiring harnesses back there. Each has a simple locking mechanism
which you need to figure out. Disconnect all cables. Now slide the
IC out by taking it in the general direction of the RF door
window. Now you can work on it at your work bench or the kitchen table.

Expose the motherboard by removing the white plastic covers and find
the long wires connecting the speedo and/or tach to the
motherboard. Look for something loose/separated/cracked/whatever...

From here you are on your own. Good luck.

Bob
