If it is anything like what has happened recently to my A4, then it
could be this. There is a wire that goes into the starter, that
becomes disconnected. When my starter was rebuilt, the positive
terminal was relocated. The fellow who rebuilt it, does not know
Audi, that well. In any event, it got disconnected, and it
occasionally made contact, resulting in a normal start, or one with a
grind. This of course, when the car was cold, since the wire was
rigid, and touched the terminal. Finally, it did not start at all.
Turns out, that it was hanging on the terminal, by the figurative
thread. Good luck Fay.
