My '94 is still alive and kicking with it's new owner.  The 12v is pretty
lightly stressed. As a family car, it not as apt to be as abused as an S6.

If you want to save it, I'd get a used transmission, pull its pan, replace
the filter, put it back together and install it. Treat it as a backup or
dirty-chore car.
