Well, I'm one of the resident Volvo experts, I guess. IIRC, Volvo 
bought the VAG diesel motor in the mid-80s. Other than that, there's 
no relationship AFAIK between the two companies.

The new x70 has nothing to do with Audi.

Oh, and for the OP,  13K Canadian for a '99 A6 is about double what 
you should spend.

The early 850s have issues with wiring harnesses and AWD components. 
You want something 2001 or later, if you end up in a Volvo.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a C4 or C5 A6 wagon with 100K+ miles. It 
will have issues too, but by and large the issues will have as much 
to do with the PO as the car itself.
