New head lights for a 5KTQ type 44

Kent,

Driving lights are not very useful as main lighting. I did this to my urQ,
big round yellow fogs, independently switched, and big round clear driving
lamps, switched via the high beams, and the results are somewhat less than
expected, but you can see the road signs from a longer distance.

The driving pattern is usually very narrow for long range illumination.
Compared to the regular high beams, they go further but they don't
illuminate as wide as the high beams. That's why they are called
"auxiliary". Fog lamps, well, everybody can see that they illuminate the
front of the car, wide and low, but that's it. Mine are oriented to both
sides to help me illuminate the ditches when I do some TSD rallying. Oh, on
a snowy road, the yellow color is fabulous for a spectacular effect, and I
guess contrast is highlighted, but this is not scientifically proven...

As for the main lighting of the urQ, I have 4x 166x110 mm Hella lamps
(standard 4"x6") with the Euro pattern and H4/H1 bulbs in there. From my
experience, standard wattage bulbs are just fine, the light pattern is more
important than the wattage. 100/80w are just a bit brighter, but it is
almost imperceptible.

So Jeffrey, for your setup, do the retro-mod from a 83-84 5t and buy good
lamps with the Euro pattern. Bosch and Hella make some, 125$CAN for a pair
is what I paid here in Montreal.

I'd look for driving lights that bolt to the bumper. Try here:

Pick something that fits your budget. Hella is good.
