My father took apart one ages ago...the best part was when he finally  
figured out how to get it open.  I heard:

"Aha!"
*SPROING**PING**SPROING**RATTLE**SPROING**SPROING*
"Ahhhhhh SH*@#$!!"

You need to break apart a couple of external welds (which will have to  
be soldered, which requires a high-wattage iron.)  Probably best to  
open it inside a plastic bag or something, as stuff goes flying.   
Don't attempt unless you have the patience of a saint, but you can get  
in pretty deep to fix things.
