The connectors are different sized on the two different switches. One (the 89 on, I think) has larger diameter studs on the back for the wiring harness connectors to plug onto.

I spent some time today looking over the Bentley switch schematics for
my 1988 5kq and my 1990 100q.

The switch pinouts are exactly the same for each year.
I checked:
Cruise Control
Lights
Turn Signals
Emergency Flasher
Windshield Wiper

All the switch pinouts match, including the wire color codes, and the
destination pinouts match also.

I'm going to remove the 5kq switch assembly and see if the 88 harness
connectors and wire codes match the used switch connectors.

Next, I will try Huw's suggestion about cleaning the switch guts with
electronic contact spray cleaner. If that works, I'll leave things
alone, but I'm sorely tempted to swap out the switches and see if the
newer one works. I just cant help myself!

If you think about it, it makes sense for the manufacturer to leave
things alone for as long as possible to reduce inventory, reduce the
cost for making new schematics, eliminate prototyping errors,
eliminate making new fixtures for harnesses, etc etc etc.

Yeah, the old switch is one piece . .the new one two pieces . .. makes
it cheaper to produce. But it works the same.

Ok, there is one difference - for the momentary wipers you pull on the
old stalk and you push down on the new one . . big deal.
