Audi = stupid? ....plus WRX drive.

I have maintained membership, but came real close this year to walking
away from it. Each time I prepare to, I hear something hopeful,
although it's usually just about the cars. Right now, the S5 and the
imminent arrival of the new A4 have my interest, but....
On a whim, I decided to got drive a new WRX this afternoon. It doesn't
feel like a thrasher anymore. It is much better and more acceptable to
me at 52. I still think some of the interior is way too cheap...I can't
stand the shift knob, but it's pretty good. Compared to the GTI, NOT as
twitchy, although it seems to accelerate noticeably faster with its' 230
hp and AWD. Much smoother dynamics and ride and the brakes were not as
grabby as the GTI. Just for the fun of it...thinking of the 16 year old
waiting to get his license, I drove the base Impreza with 170 hp. I
don't think so. Much rougher engine, WAY more body roll and
significantly inferior brakes, so I am unconvinced that less power is
safer. But it is something like $17k+ vs. $26k. How much is that
completely functional scoop worth?! Also, very little gain in mpg with
no turbo. I viewed the old WRX as something to pick up cheap and not
too abused as a thrasher some time. This one is actually something to
consider. Oh...better paint, too.
