Rick,

It could be many things, btu what comes to mind is mixture - possibly  
caused by vacuum leaks, or a faulty O2 sensor, but those are guesses.  
Step #1 is to pull any codes available, or, with an older car,  
possibly do more involved diagnostics like measuring exhaust under  
various loads ( and maybe reading the O2 sensor feedback).

I'd start with the basics - check for leaks, then pull the O2 wire  
and see what happens.  Re connect if it cures anything - you dont  
want to ruin your cat, just 'cuz the car's a dog.
