Oil leak and stalling at idle - Solved

You sed:  I'll check the valve cover gasket when I next change the oil, but
from 
memory it's a cork one that came with my head gasket set. I believe 
these can be a problem to seal. Will let you know how I get on.

Duncan, you will probably want the rubber gasket that is commonly used on MC
motors.  They are well known for being longer-lived and easier to seat than
the cork gaskets.  I have several cars sporting the rubber one, to good
results.
