Sunroof Cable Replacement

Hi Ian!

Still have the keychain you were so kind enough to source and send me,
thanks again!

Before I ripped into the cable assembly on the sunroof, I'd check the
little guide channels on each side. I had exactly the same symptoms, and
once I figured out how to get the sunroof panel out of the way (type 44,
unhook springs with bent coathanger - WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!!!!!), it was
trivial to replace the guide plates.

They get loose and sometimes break, they are pot metal die castings and
not very sturdy. The replacements (scavenged from a later year car than
mine) were slightly different in profile and made by Rockwell (same
people who made the B-70 Valkyrie Mach 3 bomber), complete with Rockwell
logo cast right in. (Didn't make my Audi go any faster, and maybe now we
know why Audi parts are so expensive.) Sunroof worked perfectly
thereafter, keeping it clean and well lubed with white silicone grease
helps a lot, too.

Look for the simple things first.

(I have to check my documentation to see if the B-70 had a sunroof.
Probably had a placard on it "Warning: Keep sunroof closed for takeoff
and landing, above Mach 2.5 and/or 60,000 feet MSL.")

Best Regards,
