Thanks to everyone for your help.  The alternator is toast.  I  have the nose 
off, and am going to take care of a few things while I am at  it.
Now....the million dollar question.....Anyone know where is the best  place 
to find the least-expensive quality replacement  alternator??  I have a Valeo.

Taking the "nose off" should become almost a routine  procedure for working 
on 
30V Audi A4s and S4s. For the extra time spent  the improved access is so 
much 
better--and you can save your entire weekly  allocation of swear words for 
something else. I just did two A4 2.8l V6 30  powertrain pulls and one 
install 
with the "nose off" but there are some  who pull engines without removing the 
front  components.
