Thanks to everyone for your help. The alternator is toast. I have the nose
off, and am going to take care of a few things while I am at it.
Now....the million dollar question.....Anyone know where is the best place
to find the least-expensive quality replacement alternator?? I have a Valeo.
Thanks again, all the information was very helpful!

Taking the "nose off" should become almost a routine procedure for working
on
30V Audi A4s and S4s. For the extra time spent the improved access is so
much
better--and you can save your entire weekly allocation of swear words for
something else. I just did two A4 2.8l V6 30 powertrain pulls and one
install
with the "nose off" but there are some who pull engines without removing the
front components.
